The
Portman Group
We subscribe to the principle surrounding
the Portman Group code of practice for alcohol advertising.
The Code applies to a drink's packaging (including its
brand name) and also to point-of-sale advertising, brand
websites, sponsorship, branded merchandise, advertorials,
press releases and sampling. All decisions about complaints
received are made by an Independent Complaints Panel.
The Portman Group's Code complements and is consistent
with a number of other Codes governing the advertising
and marketing of alcoholic drinks in the UK.
Television, radio and non-broadcast advertisements are
regulated by the Advertising Standards Authority. There
is mandatory pre-clearance of of all tv and radio advertising
before broadcast.

Radio
Advertising Clearance Centre
This subsidiary of the Commercial
Radio Companies Association can be found at www.racc.co.uk
and will clear any script free of charge if you are unsure
of any aspect of your campaign. They operate a telephone
helpline for answers to general queries on radio advertising
and advice on hypothetical radio advertising proposals.
Call Katherine Borrett on 020 7306 2620 and ask for the
Radio Copy Helpline.
How is clearance issued? The RACC asks for one copy of
the script by fax, by post or by email. Scripts must include
details of the script submitter, advertiser, product/brand,
title of script, length of advertisement and name of radio
station(s) to broadcast the advertisement, if known. Scripts
must be accompanied by satisfactory substantiation of
product claims and confirmation of legality, where applicable.
The RACC divides incoming scripts into product categories
(eg. alcohol, motoring, newspapers). RACC clearers each
have a portfolio of product categories and prioritise
scripts as they come in. The RACC issues clearance, via
Script Clearance Forms, by choosing, for example, some
of the following options: |

|
 |
Acceptable as submitted |
 |
 |
 |
Acceptable as amended |
 |
 |
 |
Acceptable with scheduling advice |

Each
script is given a clearance number and date. RACC aims
to provide either an initial response or, if unproblematic,
final clearance to all scripts submitted within 24 hours.
However, they are often a lot quicker. Their database
shows that over 70% of scripts are cleared within 8 hours
(1 working day). |
